New York City has its own brand of a "coffee culture" whose quality is at times a lively topic for debate. Just walk about anywhere in Manhattan and you'll find "a certain coffeehouse chain" on each corner. Frappuccinos and Lattes aren't exactly my thing, so I ask is it possible to find a really great cup of joe on the other side of the Hudson? By "cup of joe" I mean just that... a cup of coffee unadulterated... perhaps adding cream or sugar (or both) but NOTHING else.
I know practically everybody knows this but it's worth mentioning nonetheless. In all likelihood, you will find a good cup of coffee at any Dunkin Donuts in New Jersey. I've never been to one that just royally screwed up their coffee. The coffee beans are good stuff to begin with because they are not over-roasted as are those by "the competition."
Yet I've also had "better-than-Dunkin" coffee on the Jersey side.
With that in mind, here are my top five picks for the best coffee in New Jersey.
5. Dunkin Donuts - any location.
4. Greenberry's Coffee & Tea Company - Morristown.
3. No Joe's Cafe (aka No Ordinary Joe's) - Red Bank.
2. Small World Coffee - Princeton.
1. Empire Coffee & Tea Company - Hoboken.
Without a doubt... the best cup of coffee in New Jersey (to me) you will find at Empire Coffee & Tea Company. (Yes there is a New York City location too.) If you are an addict for coffee without all the excess (like moi), a trip to Hoboken must include a visit to Empire Coffee. The coffee here is simply amazing... and it faces tough competition especially with Small World Coffee in Princeton. Yet when you drink a cup of joe from Empire you will think you have died and gone to Java Heaven! (Note: Empire Coffee has a new location in Hoboken having moved a block away from its former location to 338 Bloomfield St.)
Cheers!

Thanks for the tip! Wifi is a plus too. I appreciate the suggestion and will check it out on my next visit.

Check out the Ridgewood Coffee Company in Ridgewood. Carries Intelligentsia beans, also brews single origin, single cups on a Clover. Great lattes and cappuccino's. Baking goods are done locally.
Also has Wifi.
